Clip of the Day: BeauSoleil
There are dozens of reasons to telework. But, to be honest, there are some reasons not to. Here are ten. Please add to the list:
- You think that boss is old school in the bad sense of the term: He/She doesn’t get it, and will assume that you are goofing off or not truly working. This can lead to all sorts of problems.
- There is no appropriate place to telework or telecommute at home.
- The information that you deal with simply is too sensitive. In theory it is possible for a teleworker to work as securely as somebody in the office, but it often doesn’t work that way – yet – in reality.
- You tend to waste time when not in a structured environment. Some people simply aren’t cut out for working without somebody lurking over their shoulder.
- You are the type of person who works too hard. If the focal point of work is the home, you will have trouble stopping after hours or on weekends.
- Connectivity at home or under your cellular (non LTE) plan is too slow. This problem still exists in rural areas.
- The work relies on brainstorming and cooperative development of ideas. There are social media tools that can reduce this drawback. But face to face still is best.
- The company drags its feet on properly reimbursing expenses.
- You don’t want to “share” personal equipment with your employer.
- You live alone and not being in an office environment will add to a sense of isolation.

11. You have to be your own IT guy.
12. Not all family members respect your work time.
13. Important face-to-face meetings are a problem. You don’t really want to meet with a prospective client in your kitchen.
14. You don’t get any “snow days.”
