Ten Tips for Teleworkers

Clip of the Day: Anton Karas (note: the audio doesn’t start until 0:17)

The rationale for telework is clear, and it can be a great way to work. By the same token, nothing comes for free. A teleworker is absent from the workplace. Inevitably, there are downsides. These can be unspoken and sublte. In some cases they may be minor and unavoidable: For instance, if the worker has a unique talent or skill and lives 500 miles away few people will resent his or her absence from the workplace. But in others – where telework is more a choice than a necessity – it can cause resentment and friction.

Here are ten things to do to minimize problems, improve relationships with bosses and co-workers and, in general, make telework and smooth as pain free as possible:

–Set aside weekly meeting time, on the phone or via Skype (or other videoconferencing system).

–If it is a video meeting, wear business attire, though a full-fledge suit is overkill.

–Use IM, Facebook and LinkedIn to communicate with co-workers. Be careful what else you show at these venues. Always reinforce the point that you are a true professional working out of the home, not somebody who approaches work half-heartedly.

–Make sure your boss is truly are in favor of telework, not just saying so because he/she has to. If they seem half-hearted, try to address their concerns.

–Make sure that you are in compliance with corporate policies, which can be complex. Don’t take short cuts.

–Offer to come into the office on a weekly or monthly basis—i.e. one day a week, two days a month or for big meetings — if it is feasible. Work through any inconvenience on your end.

–Try to have relationships with co-workers that are in some way non work-related—fantasy football, Facebook, etc.

–Don’t take advantage of telework by scheduling outside activities during working hours beyond what you would if you worked in the office.

–If possible, adjust your work hours to those of the main office if it is another time zone.

–Try to subtly bring into conversations how much more productive you are/how much money you are saving by telecommuting.

I’ve undoubtedly missed some. Pls. contact me with additions to the list.
